Bealtaine is the Irish National Arts Festival celebrating creativity in older age. It takes place each May countrywide and involves thousands of participants in events in every art form. Go and open the door’ from the poem ‘The door@ by Miroslav Holub is the theme for Bealtaine 09.
‘Go and open the door’ is an invitation to try something new, to explore something creative this Bealtaine in recognition of the life enhancing joys of constant learning and our capacity for creativity at all stages of our lives.
Bealtaine Festival at the Brockagh Centre

Sunday May 3rd
11am-4pm Car Boot Sale at the brockagh Centre. Spring Clean your life or pick yourself up a bargain. Special rate for members of Active Retirement.
Tuesday May 5th
11am – 1pm “Us Then, Us Now” – What’s changed and what’s still the same? Swap stories with the children from St. Kevin’s National School. What do you remember from your schooldays? How different are things now? How have the clothes we wear changed? Bring photos and an old style school lunch to bring back memories!
Thursday May 7th
8pm – Conary Film Club, Avoca – “Mrs Pettigrew lives for a Day”. A heartfelt comedy featuring Frances McDorman as Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess, who finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. Struggling to find new employment, Miss Pettigrew finds herself caterpulted into the glamorous and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Free to over 55s.
Saturday May 9th
8pm – Cecilia Ahearn’s Mrs Whippy at the Brockagh Centre.
MRS. WHIPPY brings Emelda O’Grady to life in a “tour de Force” performance by Mary McEvoy. This moving, heart-warming, and funny piece focuses on Emelda O’Grady, a 46-year-old woman dealing with five difficult sons, a split marriage and a new job. The soothing sounds of a Mr. Whippy van arrive at just the right time for Emelda, only now it’s not just the ice-cream that is her only true friend… Cecelia Ahern mixes laughter with tears in equal measure to create this humorous portrait of a woman finding her own place in the world. A lovely joyous journey through this woman’s live. The best revenge is finding happiness again….Tickets cost €10 for over 55s and unwaged, €15 general. Sunday May 10th
11am-4.30pm Glendalough Country Market & Craft Fair. Includes home baking, sauces, jams, plants as well as a variety of different crafts. Parking and Admission Free (Brockagh Resource Centre).
Tuesday May 12th
11am-1pm Opening Doors with Technology – have a mobile phone but not quite sure how to use it? Want to know how to download photos from a digital camera and e-mail to your friends & family? Do you want to book a flight? Then come along to the Brockagh Centre where students from Avondale Community College and tutors from the IT Centre will show you the basics and take the mystery out of mobile phones, digital photos, internet & e-mails. Followed by Group Lunch in a local venue. Free (except for lunch). Please note it is important to pre-book as we have limited IT facilities.
Monday May 18th
11am – 2pm The Clueless Mini Treasure Hunt in the National Park in Glendalough. This event has beeen specially designed by the team in the National Park with the older person in mind. There are a couple of routes, the longest being 30 to 35 minutes and shorter 15 minute routes for those who want to take it easy! The route is also wheelchair accessible. This will be followed by a ‘Bring & Share’ picinic beside the lake and then a ‘cuppa’ in the Education Centre in Glendalough and a short talk about the Park. Please wear clothes/shoes suitable for the outdoors (brollies & macs just in case). But don’t worry if the weather isn’t great we have a Plan B.
Sunday May 24th
3pm-6pm Afternoon Tea Dance with Variety Acts Brockagh Centre. Be entertained by some talented young people from the local area followed by a dance with tea & refreshments.
Saturday May 30th
9.30pm Festival Dance at the Brockagh Centre. The Bealtaine Festival will close with a Gala Dance – music by Tommy Carroll so get your dancing shoes on and prepare to have lots of fun! Cost €6 for everyone.
