Awareness Meditation Retreat                       

Meditation retreats are a life changing opportunity to deepen your meditation practice and enable life balance. Colettle Nkunda, Living Oneness will be teaching this practice in a workshop at the Brockagh Centre on Saturday the 1st of April from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Social Audit

The Glendalough & District Development Association and the Brockagh Resource Centre are compiling a social audit to establish the impact of their services on the wider community. Tidy Towns

Our first official clean-up of 2017 takes place at 11am on Saturday 4th March (meet opposite Lynhams). We supply bags and litter pickers and would welcome new helpers. Please wear gloves.

Citizens Information

The Citizens Information Centre at the Brockagh Resource Centre is open for information relating to your rights and entitlements from 10 am until noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The next clinics will take place on Tuesdays 7th and 21st March. No appointment is necessary for this free and confidential service.

Rathdrum Rugby Club            

It is league final time for the senior women in Rathdrum rugby club following their recent convincing 27-10 victory over Carlow. The Division 1 final will take place in Old Belvedere RFC at 2.30 pm on March 4 th . The women face an impressive Tullamore side in what should be a very lively game and would appreciate all support.

Caring for the Future of our Planet 

Exploring the environmental impact of our lifestyles in view of creating a sustainable world for our children. Afternoon Tea Dance

Evening Yoga with Viva

High Intensity Fitness Dane (H.I.F.D)                                      

Just pop in on Wednesday evenings at 7pm to dance your socks off with Adam and the class in cardio exercise dancing, dropping those extra calories. We will look at some quirky issues such as knowing that very significant income tax savings can be made if the right spouse dies!(What does RIGHT mean?)  What is the best time of the year to separate for tax purposes? The session will be presented by Mel Kilkenny and Stephen Loughran of LK Tax Ltd.

Basket-Making and Willow-Weaving Traditional Basket-making Workshop

This full day traditional basket-making workshop will teach you basic basketry techniques. Taught in a relaxed learning environment and you will be bringing home your own completed handmade small round willow basket (a skib). The workshops will take place in the Brockagh Resource Centre (9 am to 5 pm). Available dates are, 25th March and 22nd April. We Love  Art

Elevation Drama School                                      

Drama classes are a fantastic way of developing confidence and encouraging creativity and imagination. Drama modules will incorporate improvisation, mime, script work, vocal training and acting skills.

Laragh Glendalough Notes Week beg 13th Feb

Recent Excavations at Glendalough      

A very interesting lecture by the UCD School of Archaeology entitled “Recent Archaeological Excavations at Glendalough” took place last Friday in the Brockagh Resource revealing interested and exciting discoveries with state of the art technology such as 3D laser scanning. Volunteers from the community were given a chance to participate in the early stages of the 2016 dig. Continuation of the dig site will commence in 2017 for further investigation. Doodle4Google Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa Finalists

Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa and Laragh village are buzzing with excitement as two students are finalists in this year’s Doodle4Google art competition. Please vote Ciara and Taran to win at Vote at doodles.google.ie/d4g/. Voting from 7th Feb until 21st Feb. The winners will be announced at a big prize giving event in Google headquarters in April. Best of luck Ciara and Taran!

Laragh Glendalough Post Office

The final date for submissions to An Post is wed 15th Feb and so far we have had a terrific response from the community. Well done to all the volunteers who supervised the post office each morning in order to answer any questions needing addressing by community residents.

A free 5-week digital skills computer course is commencing shortly. This course aims to help citizens use the internet with confidence and provide the motivation and skills to reap the benefits of participating in today’s digital world. Laragh Glendalough Active Retirement will present a lecture by Joan Kavanagh in the Brockagh Resource Centre, on Tuesday 14th of February at 11am, followed by tea/coffee. This is a free talk and all are welcome. Using images from the photographic exhibition currently on display in the Centre. The exhibition and talk is based on a selection from the Lawrence and Valentine Collections held by the National Library of Ireland Photographic Archives.

Doodle4Google Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa Finalists 

Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa and Laragh village are buzzing with excitement as two students are finalists in this year’s Doodle4Google art competition. Laragh Glendalough Post Office

The consultation process for Glendalough Post Office has reopened and will remain open until the 15th February, 2017. This is as a result of the great public support from all sectors of the Laragh, Glendalough community in keeping our Post Office open. We must now avail of this opportunity to ensure that what we have done so far leaves An Post in no doubt as to why it is essential in our area. Please send a letter to Mr Alan McLoughlin, Regional Operational Manager, Block 38, GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. DO1F5p2. State the reasons why Glendalough Post Office must remain open and the problems that closure would cause for you. If you require any assistance a member of the Community will be in the Post Office from Wed, 1st February until Tuesday 14th, February (week days only) 10am to 1pm. Letters must be stamped with a 72 cent stamp. Next meeting is on Monday 6th of February. The next meeting is on Monday 6th February at 8pm in the Brockagh Centre.

Happy Days welcome toddlers and parents from 10.30 to 12 at the Brockagh Centre. A large delegation of local people protested outside the Dáil on Thursday 26th of January. The group were met by ministers from Co.Wicklow inside the Dáil building. As a result of campaigning An Post have given the community a two week consultation process to decide its future. A meeting held Mon the 30th at the Brockagh Resource will give provide a full update on what is happening.

Laragh Glendalough Notes Week beg 23rd Jan

Closure of Laragh Glendalough Post Office

The local community of Laragh and Glendalough are fighting the closure of their Post Office. The community, along with the GDDA, local councillors and TDs, is trying to come up with a solution to ensure it remains open as the loss of the facility would have many negative impacts.   Each pupil in Scoil Chaoimhín Naofa has sent an individually designed postcard to Minister Denis Naughton requesting him to influence the decision of An Post. On Sat the 21st of January the community demonstrated in the village against the closure with another meeting scheduled in the Brockagh Resource Centre at 8pm, Tues 23rd  of January. The post office is due to close at the end of January 2017.

 

Recent Excavations at Glendalough                                                                                                           

 A public lecture by the UCD School of Archaeology entitled “Recent Archaeological Excavations at Glendalough” will take place in the Brockagh Resource Centre from 7 to 8.30 pm on 10th February. Everyone is very welcome to attend this free talk. There will be a €2 charge for tea, coffee and biscuits.

Glendalough – An Age Old Attraction                                                                                              

 Laragh Glendalough Active Retirement will present a lecture by Joan Kavanagh in the Brockagh Resource Centre, on Tuesday 14th of February at 11am, followed by tea/coffee. This is a free talk and all are welcome. Using images from the photographic exhibition currently on display in the Centre. The exhibition and talk is based on a selection from the Lawrence and Valentine Collections held by the National Library of Ireland Photographic Archives.

Basket-Making and Willow-Weaving Traditional Basket-making Workshop                                              

 This full day traditional basket-making workshop will teach you basic basketry techniques. It will be a relaxed learning environment and you will bring home your own completed handmade small round willow basket (a skib). The workshops will take place in the Brockagh Resource Centre (9 am to 5 pm). Available dates are 25th February, 25th March and 22nd April. Places are limited to five participants per workshop, so be sure to book as soon as possible. Brockagh Christmas Market                                                                                                                     

We would like to thank Santa and his elves for coming along to the Brockagh Christmas market. A special thanks to Timmy Delamere, who so kindly transported Santa from Lynhams to the Brockagh Centre with his horse and carriage. Tidy Towns AGM      

 The Tidy Towns AGM took place on 17th January. The officers for the coming year are Finian McEvoy (chairperson) and Valerie Merrigan (secretary). Look out for details of clean-ups in future newsletters. Pat Casey TD and local councillors Gail Dunne, Shay Cullen and John Snell came along after the meeting to answer questions and listen to suggestions from the floor. Their attendance on the night was much appreciated.

Active Retirement 2016 and 2017

Last year Laragh and Glendalough Active Retirement group had an eventful year. Congratulations to one of our members Anthony Flynn who joined the committee of County Wicklow Network for Older People. Throughout the year the group had day and overnight trips around the country. Wicklow was the winner of Go for Life 2016 games, congratulations to Dick Mahon, Olive Mahon, Finian McEnvoy and John Holden who participated and are from our AR group, who were part of the team.  Joan Kavanagh won the Christmas hamper. The coming year is no less eventful with an invite to the Dail, more leisure trips, lunches, connecting with other AR groups, tea dances, weekly exercise are just a few events planned for 2017.The group’s first day back for 2017 will be on January 24th.

The Citizens Information Centre is open for information relating to your rights and entitlements from 10am until noon on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The first clinic of 2017 will take place on Tuesday 17th January at 10am until noon  and will continue thereafter on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Drama School                                                                                                                                                  Drama classes are a fantastic way of developing confidence and encouraging creativity and imagination. Drama modules will incorporate improvisation, mime, script work, vocal training and acting skills.

Students will also learn from the Irish Board of Speech and Drama syllabus and be afforded opportunities to take graded examinations under a fully qualified teacher. Glendalough Christmas Market 2016

The Brockagh Resource Centre had a great turn out for our annual Christmas Market. We would like to thank our performers on the day Eileen McClane, Stage Bratz and Roundwood Choir for their melodious Christmas music and Noel who provided our Christmas tree. To Timmy and Lily Delamere, son  Jacob and daughter Alana for providing Santa with a their wonderful horse and cart. The Payne family brought Santa and his charming hardworking elves from the north with such efficiency. Last but not least thank you to our stallholders and Lynhams Hotel for their help on the day. We hope to see you all next year for another festive day out in Glendalough.

Christmas Carols by candlelight in the Monastic City

A great way to start Christmas, in one of the most evocative settings in Wicklow. We invite you to join us on Monday 19th December at 7.30pm for a unique event to celebrate Christmas. Beginning with a candlelit procession through the monastic gates we will proceed to the ruins of the candlelit Cathedral for an evening of traditional carol singing in the monastic style. Some of our most familiar carols would have been sung here by the monks of Glendalough themselves in the 8th and 9th centuries. Tea and Coffee will be provided afterwards in the Glendalough Hotel courtesy of Pat Casey. This a free event and open to everyone, including children, which must be accompanied by an adult. Assemble at 7.15pm at Glendalough Hotel.

Everyone is welcome to come along to walk at their own pace for less than one hour. All ages and abilities are welcome. Get Ireland Walking is funded by the Irish Sports Council and the HSE, and supported by the Irish Heart Foundation, Mountaineering Ireland, Age and Opportunity, GAA, Arthritis Ireland and others.  Are you looking for some company on those lonely winter evening walks, well we can help. Active Retirement Christmas Raffle

It’s not only the Christmas season that will soon be upon us but The Hamper Season will be too! The Active Retirement Group have put together a fantastic wide range of gifts as well as a beautiful luxury Hamper; all to be raffled on 13th December for the last get together in 2016.  The Hamper will be on display at the Brockagh Resource Centre and in Willie McCoy’s over the next few weeks.  Tickets will be on sale at the Brockagh Resource Centre, Willie McCoy’s and a number of other outlets.  We thank you for your support. Happy Days                                                                                                                                         Happy Days is from 10.30 to 12.00 weekly at the Brockagh Centre. We would like to invite people with babies and young child to come for a social morning with their children for some play, chat and of course light refreshments. Christmas Tea Dance

Christmas Afternoon Tea Dance at the Brockagh Centre had a record attendance of over 125 people dancing the afternoon away to The Wicklow Man, a great afternoon of socializing and dancing was had by all. There was request for many more events like this in 2017. A big thank you to the Active Retirement Committee and the BRC staff for contributing to its success.

Messy Play For Kids

Messy Play is coming to the Brockagh Centre on December, Monday 5th.  The classes give babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers the opportunity to come together and discover everyday materials in a new and exciting way within a fun, friendly and relaxed environment.  At Messy Play you can expect to find, painting, water, sand, dough, gloop, jelly, flour, spaghetti, mud and much more, each class is different. Glendalough – An Age Old Attraction

Rathdrum Historical Society will present a lecture by Joan Kavanagh in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh on Glendalough – An Age Old Attraction on Monday, 5th at 8 pm, followed by tea/coffee and festive mince pies. Please note the change from the Society’s usual venue. There will be a charge of €3 at the door and all are welcome. Using images from the photographic exhibition currently on display in the Centre. The exhibition and talk is based on a selection from the Lawrence and Valentine Collections held by the National Library of Ireland Photographic Archives. The Lawrence Collection dates from 1865 when William Lawrence opened a photographic studio in his mother’s fancy goods store in Sackville Street, now O’Connell Street, opposite the GPO. His chief photographer, Robert French is credited with taking 30,000 of the 40,000 negatives of almost every town and village in Ireland between 1865 and 1916. Valentine & Sons were a Scottish company who expanded into the post card business and the collection of photographs covers towns and villages in the Republic of Ireland, and dates from 1903 to 1960. Glendalough features extensively in these collections.

Christmas Tea Dance

Well done to the Active Retirement Committee for a very successful evening on Sunday 27th November when they had their Christmas Tea Dance with lively music from The Wicklow Man which was enjoyed by all.  Dancers came from all over the county and further afield, with the attendance reaching record numbers of 125 people

We Love Art                                                                                                                                             Art and crafts classes for kids, on Monday afternoons at the Brockagh Centre. 28th Annual Supper Dance

Our annual supper dance in aid of St. John’s Church, Laragh will be held in Lynham’s Hotel, Laragh on Friday 18th of November from 8pm to 1am. Join us for dinner and live music including a draw for a hamper. Tickets cost €22.50.

Chair Yoga                                                                                                                                          Chair Yoga classes at the Brockagh Centre will run on Thursdays at 11.30am to 12.45pm. Chair Yoga is suitable for those who may find regular yoga classes too strenuous – those who may be completely new to yoga, recovering from injury or illness or generally less active and mobile. Congratulations to Laragh and Glendalough Tidy Towns Committee with their results in this year’s competition. Their hard work over the year is very appreciated by the community and their efforts are an important aspect in community living. Will be held in Roundwood Parish Hall and Centre on Wed 2nd of November 2016 commencing at 8pm. The purpose of the JPC is to provide a forum where the local authority and the senior Garda officers, responsible for the policing of that area, can consult and make recommendations on matters affecting the policing of the area and in particular to keep under review the levels and patterns of crime, disorder and anti-social behavior occurring and the factors underlying and contributing to it.

Walking in the Lightness of Being

The advanced teachings of the Lenmurian Mystery School use ancient wisdom to transform our lives and the lives of all. We Love Art

Art and crafts classes for kids, are back on Monday afternoons at the Brockagh Centre from Sept. 12th. Classes cover a wide range of art and craft forms. We work with lots of different materials and learn new skills and techniques with every project. It’s all about the joy of making! The Clara Vale committee wish to say a big thank you to all who helped them organize the fun run/walk last Thursday evening. Thanks to all the walkers and runners for their support. An enjoyable evening was had by all and €1,095 was raised.

The next Car Boot will be on Sunday 4th September. The next Car Boot will be on Sunday 4th September. In August we had fresh vegetables from our local community garden and of course a sunny day to enjoy cake, tea and a chat with our regular and new customers. Open from 9.30 to 4pm. Glendalough – An Age Old Attraction

The Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh is currently hosting an exhibition of historic photographs of the Glendalough Valley through the ages. These images are from the National Library of Ireland’s Lawrence Collection. They show the enduring popularity of Glendalough as an age old attraction for visitors from the late 19th century onwards. View the exhibition in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh and then wander the one mile to Glendalough to see first-hand how the features depicted (Round Tower, Royal Hotel, Gateway, Deer Stone etc) have changed over time, also view the pop up displays in outdoor locations at the Green Road, The Visitor Centre, the Monastic City Entrance and the Information Office, Upper Lake. The exhibition is an initiative of the Glendalough Heritage Forum which is a partnership of local residents, land owners, state agencies, County Council officials and researchers from a variety of institutions. The aim of the GHF is to facilitate understanding and management of the remarkable cultural heritage of Glendalough with the local community, maximising the benefits of working together and sharing information. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Summer Youth Leadership Programme

East Wicklow Youth Service is providing a Youth Leadership Programme for young people in Laragh on September 14th from 4pm-5.30pm and runs up to November. The programme aims to enable young people to develop the skills and qualities necessary to be good leaders, as well as challenging them to use these skills for the betterment of society. Fun Run, Walk and Kids Trail Race

Clara Vale Church are hosting a 6k fun run, 4k walk and kids trail race on Thursday 25th August 2016. Registration will be at 6pm beside Clara Vale Church with refreshments and parking provided. Morning Yoga

A morning Yoga class will be run by Louise who is also teaching our Chair yoga students at the Brockagh Centre.  These class will run every Thursday from 10 to 11.15am. This is a gently paced class where students learn how to align, open and strengthen the body gradually while stabilizing the platforms of the feet and ankles, hips and pelvis and shoulder girdle.  The class begins with general and targeted warm up sequences followed by Postures (asanas) which are taught from their foundations using fundamental building blocks to enable students to feel the postures correctly, safely and to their own ability before bringing it all together into a Vinyasa (breath connected) sequence and ending with relaxation in Savasana.  The practice will provide gentle stretching, improved strength and flexibility, as well as help students to find balance and calm in everyday life.  To find out more Call Louise on 087 603 2202 or Brockagh Centre on 0404 45600

Czech Republic Visit To Glendalough

On September 14th of this year we are pleased to welcome our friends from Octineves again to Laragh/Glendalough area. We journeyed to Octineves last year and enjoyed a fantastic time with them. Their spirit of generosity and hospitality was immeasurable and much appreciated. Over their five day visit here there will be an opportunity for the Laragh/Glendalough residents to meet them, please look out for details posted on the Brockagh Resource Centre Facebook page nearer their arrival or in the first week in September drop into the Brockagh Centre for information on the noticeboard.

Paul Healy’s Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is the art of self defense that originated in Korea. It is recognized as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years. The name was selected for its appropriate description of the art: Tae (foot), Kwon (hand), Do (art). Festival Concert for Roundwood                                                                                                  A variety concert will take place in the beautiful surroundings of St Laurence O’Toole’s Church on Friday the 29th of July at 7:30pm. A fantastic line up of talent including Jack Byrne, Female Barbershop Quartet, Will Fitzpatrick, Brendan Kennedy, McGrath Flood Irish Dancers, Joe McKenna, Bronagh McLaughlin & Special Guests! Light refreshments will served afterwards in Roundwood Parish Hall. Go for Life 2016 games sponsored by Wicklow Sports Partnership Co. Wicklow won the county awards in pool A. They competed against Fingall, Mayo, Bail atha Cliath, Waterford, Meath, Kildare, Carlow, Cork, Clare, Dublin city and Limerick. The teams from Wicklow managed by John Holden of Glendalough competed other counties in a celebration of Go for Life 2016 games in DCU on Saturday 11th June. The first team was captained by Breda Kehoe of Ashford Community Group and was joined by teammates Dick Mahon, John Conway and Olive Mahon, all whom are from Glendalough Active Retired. Team two was Captained by Finian McEvoy from Laragh and teammates Brian Schwepps (Blessington), Tom McHugh (Ashford Community Group) and PJ Hynes (Tinahely Men’s Shed). The final team was captained by John Quinn and was made up of Tony Londberg, Jim Kennedy and Eddie Hogan with the whole team coming from Tinahely Men’s Shed. The teams competed in Scidles, a form of bowling, Flisks, a form of pitch and toss, also Lobbers, a type of boules. The Brockagh Centre wishes to congratulate the team on their great victory and a special thanks to Valerie McCoy for her work in training the team.
