The Big Dig at Glendalough We are delighted to welcome the School of Irish Archaeology for the annual Big Dig, this time in a new location on the lawns outside the OPW Visitor Centre. Join us on this hands on excavation for kids at Glendalough one of Irelands most celebrated archaeological sites. Calling all budding archaeologists and inquisitive minds for family fun and entertainment! Throughout the day we will be undertaking a simulated excavation, exploring the past and learning more about the artifacts uncovered with our mobile Viking House Excavation Workshop - The Big Dig! Hourly slots available, there will be a small number of walk in places available on the day but to guarantee your place book via the eventbrite. This is a free event but a car parking fee of €4/5 applies to use nearby car parks. Alternatively there is a free car park in Laragh (2km away). Thursday 3rd of August at 7.30pm, Professor Mary Kelly-Quinn will take us on a journey into Wicklow and Ireland's beautiful freshwater habitats and biodiversity, the threats to water quality and what we can do to protect the freshwater resources we depend on. Professor Mary Kelly-Quinn is a freshwater ecologist and lecturer in the School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin and a member of the UCD Earth Institute. She is also actively involved in training and promotion of citizen science in Ireland. Glendalough Visitor Centre As part of the OPW's 2023 programme of Irish Sign Language Tours at our Heritage Sites we are delighted to offer an ISL interpreted guided tour of Glendalough, Co. Wicklow on August 06th at 10.30 Tickets are free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance by emailing glendaloughbookings@opw.ie. Walking group in the Brockagh On Monday mornings weekly at 10am join the Laragh walking group at the Brockagh Resource Centre for a walk around the Glendalough area for approximately one hour. No need to book, just show up on the day. Glendalough Heritage Forum We are sorry that due to significant demand for places we are no longer able to take reservations. Please contact us if you would like to join the reserve list: glendaloughheritageforum@gmail.com. However, any places that become available may not be known until close to the event. We regret that we cannot accommodate everyone interested in participating on the community excavation but as a licensed excavation on a national monument it is important that we maintain a high level of supervision and management. Glendalough Heritage Forum plans a number of online events for Heritage Week (https://glendalough.wicklowheritage.org/) and we will post weekly updates on the excavations on this page if you would like to follow our progress across the community excavation and the UCD Field School that follows. Laragh Tidy Towns Thank you to all the local residents, the local group of women from Ukraine and a few young children for helping us out on our big community clean up of the year. Everyone was brilliant with a great team spirit making it enjoyable for us on these evenings. laraghglendaloughtt@gmail.com Wicklow Way Re-Route We have opened a minor reroute on the Wicklow Way. When heading South just after passing the Mullacor saddle and start to descend into Glenmalure a new path has been built through Coillte land. This is an effort to create a more sustainable trail and remove some difficult /sensitive muddy and hard to maintain terrain. Thanks to David Ward for his excellent work on the path. Thanks also to Coillte and Wicklow Mountains National Park together with County Wicklow Partnership for this collaborative effort to improve recreation in Wicklow - funded by the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. Run the Ridge 2023 A 20 km mountain and trail run up across the spectacular Derrybawn Ridge. This 10 km trail-only option available in Derrybawn Woods. Starting in Laragh, Co. Wicklow. WICKLOW ATHLETICS RUNNERS: You should register separately through MyRunResults (link open shortly) as these races count in the Wicklow Athletics Off-Road Championship 2023. Details on https://worldsmarathons.com/. The ‘Run the Ridge’ race series consists of a 20 km mixed mountain and trail run, and a 10 km trail run. This race is set up to raise funds for local club Laragh GFC and organised with the help of experienced runners and organisers from Glendalough AC and MyRunResults.     Laragh & Glendalough Tidy Towns Tidy Towns is holding a big community clean up on Wed 12th July at 7pm. We are hoping to see a big turnout that evening. All ages are welcome to join us but please guardians/parents accompany children attending. Mobile Library A mobile comes to Laragh every second Thursday from 12.15 to 12.50pm and parks at the back of Lynhams Hotel. Phone on 087 9135229 or email library@wicklowcoco.ie. For people who have difficulty accessing their nearest public library, the Mobile Library Service gives them the opportunity to avail of a public library facility. The mobile library carries approximately 2,500 items with free access to many online resources including downloadable audio books, newspapers and more. Next dates are Thurs 14th and 28th of July. Summer lecture (number 2) This Thursday 13th of July Collie Ennis will be giving a fantastic talk on the amphibians of Wicklow. Come along to learn about our native frogs and newts, as well as some non-native arrivals. Collie Ennis is a research associate at Trinity College Dublin and Science Officer with the Herpetological Society of Ireland. Annamoe Centre A big thank you to all those who came to our recent Rambling House/Storynight in the Annamoe Centre. We had another fabulous night of music, songs and stories.     Wicklow Pioneers Mass On 16th of June, mass at 9am in St. Kevin’s Church, Laragh will be for living & deceased members of Wicklow Pioneers. All are welcome. Glendalough Community Excavations We are delighted to announce that Glendalough Community Excavations will return 8th-18th August 2023. If you have an interest in archaeology and Glendalough it is a fantastic experience. We regret we cannot offer places to those under 18 this year but we hope to welcome younger participants again next year. Adult places (subject to availability) are available from fixed blocks of two or three days. No prior knowledge of excavation is required and we endeavour to accommodate people of all abilities. An American Celebration of Music An uplifting concert of music from both sides of the Atlantic Featuring, direct from U.S.A! Northern Cincinnati Youth Orchestra, directed by Marva Rasmussen & Carolyn Quinn. This is a free concert on Friday 9th June at 3pm. Everyone is welcome. Bright Stars (Toddler and Baby Group) We had a great gathering this week at The Brockagh Centre, nearly 20+ ‘bright stars’ attended their weekly get-together and had fun with a mixture of lovely treats and danced to ‘head shoulders, knees & toes and the ‘hokey pokey’. ‘Moo Music’ will be here 14th June and our last get together will be 28th June - Leonard from First Aid Ireland will be giving a short Pediatric talk. Thank you all for your continued weekly attendance, it keeps our group interesting and a great way to make friends and keep in contact with each other.     Glendalough Community Excavations We are delighted to announce that Glendalough Community Excavations will return 8th-18th August 2023. If you have an interest in archaeology and Glendalough it is a fantastic experience. We regret we cannot offer places to those under 18 this year but we hope to welcome younger participants again next year. Adult places (subject to availability) are available from fixed blocks of two or three days. No prior knowledge of excavation is required and we endeavour to accommodate people of all abilities. Unfortunately over the last few days there has been numerous queries regarding this where people have picked them up and brought them home don’t forget these are wild animals and will have more chance of survival if left alone. Roundwood Laragh Cardiac First Responders are Volunteers serving the greater Roundwood, Laragh, Moneystown and Annamoe areas since January 2005 in association with NAS (National Ambulance Service). We provide 24/7 cover, year 'round and have a dedicated team of 16 CFRs. Our Volunteers do monthly training and regular upskilling. We cover a 9 mile radius from Annamoe Bridge in every direction! We came back online with NAS exactly two months ago, after a long stand-down during the Covid pandemic. Since going live, we have responded to TWELVE emergency 999 calls made by our neighbours in the community. That's a callout every 5 days (before Covid we would have 1 or 2 callouts a month). I'm sure you can agree that this is an exceptional increase. We currently receive NO grant funding of any type.
