The Wicklow Placenames Project 2026

The Wicklow Placenames project aims to record the minor placenames of county Wicklow and is looking for you to get involved. Minor placenames are  typically not recorded on maps but are known locally and usually passed down through generations via oral tradition. These local names are steeped in local landscape, geology, history, language, folklore and customs and are a rich and unique part of our Wicklow heritage.

This project is an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan and is being co-ordinated on behalf of Wicklow County Council by Pat Reid, please contact Pat at info@wicklowwillow.ie if you have information to share or would like to know more.

Glendalough Car Boot & Community Market – A Great Sunday Out!

Sunday 9th August

Looking for a bargain or something a little different? Visit the Glendalough Car Boot & Community Market at the Brockagh Resource Centre in Laragh (A98 D3H1) and browse a fantastic selection of bargains, handmade crafts and locally produced goods.

You'll find a wide variety of items including gifts, clothing, plants, books, toys, skincare products, candles, artwork, tools, household goods and much more. Whether you're searching for a hidden treasure, picking up an affordable gift or simply enjoying a leisurely browse, there's something for everyone. 

The market is open to the public every Sunday from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Sun 9th August. Make a day of it and enjoy an affordable hot dog or burger for lunch, followed by one of our regular baker's delicious homemade desserts with a cup of tea or coffee.

Stall spaces- inside €17 (table included), outside: €15 (bring your own table).  Please note: All stallholders must pre-book their space. Bat Walk and Talk

Our next Bat Walk is on 19th of August at 8.45pm with a Bat Talk at 7.45pm. Join us to learn all about these wonderful creatures as we search for bats in flight using our bat detectors along the dark, wooded paths of Glendalough. Species of bats that have been encountered on previous walks include: Soprano Pipistrelle, Leisler’s, long-eared and Daubenton’s bats.

Booking: Free of charge. Booking is not necessary.

Parking: Parking is available at the County Council Upper Lake Car Park, A98W778 (charges apply). The car park will remain open for the duration of this event. But will close promptly thereafter.

Practicalities: Walking approximately 3 kilometres on both hard and rough surfaced paths on the valley floor. Bring a torch and insect repellent! Dress for the outdoors and bring waterproofs just in case. Except for guide or assistance dogs, dogs are not permitted on National Park events.

Glendalough & District Development Association (GDDA) CLG

The Annual General Meeting of the GDDA CLG will take place on Thursday, 13th August 2026, at 8.30 p.m. in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh.

The meeting will include a review of the Association's activities over the past year, presentation of the annual financial statements, election of the Board of Directors, and discussion of plans for the year ahead.

Expressions of Interest are welcome from people who would like to join our voluntary Board of Directors, particularly those with a passion for or experience in arts and creative programmes, music and performance, creative writing and literature, cultural event planning and community engagement. Previous board experience is not required. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

Big Dig at Glendalough

A children's hands-on archaeological excavation led by the School of Irish Archaeology (SIA) where participants get the chance to be an archaeologist by digging for treasures and artefacts dating back over 1000 years and learning about our Viking ancestors through the eyes of real archaeologists. Join us on the 23rd August, 11am - 4pm, Glendalough Visitor Centre (outside on lawn), Co. Wicklow. A98 HC80.

Hourly sessions, no booking just turn up. Set on the lawn of Glendalough Visitor Centre within the backdrop of Glendalough monastic enclosure. Organised by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council in association with the Glendalough Heritage Forum as a Heritage Plan action. Glen Tots - our Baby & Toddler Group at Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh, Co. Wicklow, A98 D3H1. Join us every Wednesday (no need to prebook)10.30am - 12.15pm, €5.50 per family. You’ll find a warm welcome, friendly faces, play, songs, laughter and community that make Wednesdays so special. 

One of the few baby & toddler groups continuing every week throughout the summer! At Glen Tots you’ll enjoy a fun, relaxed play session for babies and toddlers. Delicious fresh fruit for the little ones. Tea, coffee & biscuits for grown-ups so pop in and enjoy a great start to your day! A chance to meet, chat and connect with other parents, grandparents and carers in a friendly, welcoming space. Whether you’ve been with us for years or are thinking of coming along for the first time, we’d love to welcome you this Wednesday.

Taekwon-Do at Laragh

Laragh Taekwon-Do is running the fantastic ITF Kids Development Program for ages 4 to 8yrs, it covers topics such as physical skills, mind skills, independence skills, nutrition awareness and of course Taekwon-Do Skills.  The program also has three extra modules namely Danger Awareness,  Stranger Awareness and Bullying Awareness.

We also run the full International Taekwon-Do Federation syllabus including pattern, sparring, power and special technique for our 10s upward and teenagers.

Classes are not running in August 2026 but will be returning on Tuesday evenings from September onwards in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh.
