  • Laragh Glendalough Notes Week Beg 1st July

    Laragh Glendalough Tidy Town Many congratulations to the Cluain Bán Residents Association which was recently formed at a meeting in Lynham’s Hotel in Laragh.  The following officers were elected to the Cluain Ban Residents Association committee: Michael Brennan, Chairperson; Fiona English, Secretary; Helen Kinlan Treasurers - (Fiona English 2nd signatory).  Committee members, Yvonne Brennan, Derek Cullen, Gordon Kinlan, Margaret Stakem and other residents to be included who were not available on the night. Numerous items were discussed with a view to enhancing this lovely village estate.  Next meeting on July the 9th at 8PM in a residents home.  Laragh Glendalough Tidy Towns look forward to working collaboratively with the Cluain Ban Residents Association and wish them lots of luck in their future development. Bright Stars Parent and Toddler Group The Wednesday playgroup has finished for the Summer months and will be back in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh in September for more fun play and chat. Glendalough Market Sunday 14th July Our next event is on Sunday, July 14th. Come shop indoor and outdoor with a variety of items for sale with beautiful handmade crafts and plenty of bargains and from gifts, clothes, plants, books, toys, skincare products, candles, art, tools, household items etc.  You might be a keen bargain hunter or enjoy browsing for affordable gifts. Summer Lectures at Wicklow Mountains National Park We are delighted to announce the start of our talks over the summer of 2024. We have a wide range of talks scheduled. Restoring The Earth, Patch By Patch  - how to give nature a chance to heal by building an Ark (an Act of Restorative Kindness to the Earth).  By Mary Reynolds: reformed landscape gardener, author and nature activist.     Glendalough Heritage Forum Just finishing the first of two weeks of Glendalough Heritage Forum community post-excavation 2024. Last week was at the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh. Sorting samples and checking artefacts. Many thanks to The Heritage Council, Wicklow County Council and UCD School of Archaeology for support and Brockagh Resource Centre for hosting! We also hosted a visit from 66 children from St Kevin's National School, which was great fun! Thanks to all of our volunteers for their time last week - great progress made on some key post excavation tasks. looking forward to one more week in the UCD labs in July. AA Meetings  (Ongoing) Closed AA Meetings are held in the Brockagh Resource Centre are ongoing at 8.30 p.m. every Monday night. Elevation Cheer and Acro Summer Camp We are holding our annual summer camp in the Brockagh Resource Centre Laragh for children aged 4+. Our camps are for those who love to dance and learn new skills! Camps will consist of tumbling, stunts, Cheer & Pom, Acro dance and of course lots of fun! Laragh 15th - 19th July Primary/Level 1 at 10am to 1pm and Level 2+ on from 10am - 2pm.     Blessing of the Graves Brockagh will be on Sunday 16th June after 11.30am mass. Glendalough Blessing of the Graves is on Friday 21st June at 7pm. Story Night In Annamoe Centre The next Rambling House/Story Night in the Annamoe Centre will take place on Friday next the 14th of June at 8pm and all are welcome.  We are also looking for some volunteers to help out with the teas on the night and all upcoming story nights which are only held every three months. Anyone interested in helping out please contact 086-8749092. Bat Walks Summer 2024 (WMNP) Wednesday 12th June at 9.30pm. Wednesday 17th July at 9.30pm. Wednesday 14th August at 8.30pm with a Bat Talk at 7.30pm. For the walks, meet at the National Park Information Office, Glendalough, A98R221. For the family friendly Talk in August, meet at the National Park Education Centre, A98AP99. Free event. Booking is not necessary. Dress for the outdoors and bring waterproofs just in case. This is a free event. Except for guide/assistance dogs, dogs not permitted on National Park events. Mobile Library A mobile comes to Laragh every second Thursday from 12.15 to 12.50pm and parks at the back of Lynhams Hotel. Nex dates are June 20th and July 4th. For people who have difficulty accessing their nearest public library, the Mobile Library Service gives them the opportunity to avail of a public library facility. The mobile library carries approximately 2,500 items with free access to many online resources including downloadable audio books, newspapers and more. Active Retirement Laragh The Active retirement group were given an information morning and tour of Turlock Hill followed by Lunch in the Hollywood Cafe.  Thanks to the staff of Turlock Hill for the warm reception and tour, special thanks to Paddy Hanlon who gave us an insight into working and pastimes in Turlock Hill. The Visitors Centre at Glendalough was our next trip and the staff gave us a history of the centre and the work done in the centre. Thanks to all the staff in the visitors centre for a very enjoyable morning. We danced away to the Wicklow Man on the 19th of May from 3-6  a great turnout and we were joined by the active retirement group from Sallynoggin in Dublin.  Thanks to the volunteers on the day, Phllomena, Nora, Nuala, Annie and Valerie.  Thank you to everyone who brought prizes for the Raffle and to the Wicklow Man for the great music. Bingo was last Tuesday and only managed to get in a few games, so another date has been set for the bingo. Our lunch dates have been in the Glenmalure Lodge, the Wicklow Heather and Jacobs Well and we are grateful for the lovely lunches they provide. Maxine has put us through a few more Tuesday mornings of Chair Yoga and is keeping us fit and healthy.We were in Dublin Castle on the 28th of May and a thank you to Jean Kelly from Rathdrum for looking after us in Dublin Castle.  She is also helping us with our next trip to Kilkenny castle.  Thank you Jean. Dogs found Tied to Forest Lane Post A local woman found three dogs tied to a barrier on a forestry lane in Glenmacnass over the weekend. She has contacted the authorities and luckily they are safe and well. A photo of the dogs was posted on the Laragh/Glendalough/Annamoe open forum Facebook Page. Notice from Wicklow Mountains National Park National Parks and Wildlife Service Staff were on the ground and in the air today on fire patrol in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Fires, campfires and disposable barbecues can be extremely dangerous to our natural habitats. When used in woodland or in upland heath areas and placed directly on the ground, they can cause wildfires which pose significant damage to wildlife and the environment. This weekend, a native oak was thoughtlessly damaged in Glendalough when a fire was lit against it. Please help us Protect Wildlife, do not light fires, use gas barbecues only. Taekwon-Do at Laragh Laragh Taekwon-Do is running the fantastic ITF Kids Development Program for the 4s to 8s, it covers topics such as physical skills, mind skills, independence skills, nutrition awareness and of course Taekwon-Do Skills.  The program also has three extra modules namely Danger Awareness,  Stranger Awareness and Bullying Awareness. We also run the full International Taekwon-Do Federation syllabus including pattern, sparring, power and special technique for our 10s upward and teenagers. Classes are on Tuesday evenings in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh. Bright Stars Baby & Toddler Group Why not come along to our baby and toddler group on Wednesday mornings at 10.30am. Each week this group will provide a welcoming and lively space for parents and children to gather and grow. Our activities will include ‘messy play’, story and song, games (guest speakers), snacks, tidy-up and new equipment which will allow both you as the parent/carer and your child to meet friends, explore new things and learn. For some parents, grandparents and carers, the weekly catch-up and opportunity for children to play and make new friends is enough. Laragh Tea Dance Laragh Glendalough Active Retirement Group are hosting the Spring Laragh Tea Dance on Sunday May 19th from 3pm to 6pm with refreshments in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh. There will be dancing all afternoon to music by The Wicklow Man. Admission €10. The active retirement group meets every Tuesday morning from 10.45am – 12.15pm in the Brockagh Centre. So if you fancy a chat, a cuppa and some light exercise, dancing and music come along on Tuesdays. We always welcome new members to join our group.
